ReverseTethering Server

ReverseTethering Server

Newest version: 1.1.2

In order for ReverseTethering to be able to share your computer's Internet connection with your Android device, you have to run the ReverseTetheringServer application on your computer. The application is distributed in three versions: One is for macOS, one for Windows, and one for Linux.

IMPORTANT: ReverseTethering is suffering from poor ratings on Google Play recently, mostly because people have troubles setting everything up and give bad reviews instead of contacting me, the developer.
For a new app like ReverseTethering, good Play Store ratings are of tremendous importance.
I am developing this application as a hobby in my leisure time and am devoting great deals of my weekend offering support to users.

If you find ReverseTethering NoRoot useful, please write a good review on Google Play!
I highly appreciate your support. Thanks!

If you are having troubles using the app, please contact me via email and I'll give my best to help!

ReverseTethering Server Requirements

  • Java Runtime Environment 1.7 or newer
  • x86 Processor (Send me an email if you want to run the server on ARM)

Instructions

  1. Enable USB Debugging in the Developer System Settings on your device
  2. Connect your device to your computer via a USB cable.
  3. If you are using Windows, you have to install USB drivers for your Android device now. These drivers are typically provided by the device manufacturer as a download. For some devices, Windows can automatically find, download and install the drivers when you connect your Android device for the first time. Please note there is a difference between MTP drivers (for file exchange) and ADB drivers (which RevTet needs). Many computers automatically install the MTP drivers, but not the ADB drivers. In order to find the appropriate ADB drivers for your device, please do an Internet research. This page is usually a good starting point.
  4. On Linux, you have to set up your system to recognize the Android device. Instructions can be found here (Start with the 3rd point).
  5. Download the right archive of the Reverse Tethering server application from below
  6. Unzip the downloaded file
  7. On macOS: Double-click ReverseTetheringServer.app
    On Windows: Double-click ReverseTetheringServer.exe
    On Linux: Double-Click ReverseTetheringServer.jar

Important: The program only adds an icon to your computer's notification area, it does not open a window. Details on connection status and a possibility to close the program can be found by right-clicking the notification icon.

The application comes as portable program that can be executed from any directory and does not have to be installed.

  2. Thanks a lot! It's the only method, that doesn't need root on pc, but some apps (Youtube, Geometry Dash...) are thinking there's no connection...

    2. Some apps only check for a wifi or 3G connection, so they do not recognize ReverseTethering's connection. That's an issue of those apps that I cannot change anything about. You could try to send an email to the authors of these apps to ask them to change the way they check for an Internet connection.

  3. I loaded Reverse tethering server on win 7. No sooner than it started up Panda Antivirus 2016 puts it in quarantine and disables it. I scanned it before starting and panda said it was clean. But no sooner had I started it up and Panda reported adb infected, puts it in quarantined reporting adb infected virus. Disabling the application. What should I be doing.

    1. I have no idea what adb infected means. My program contains a binary of the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) that might have confused your Antivirus program. However, Android Debug Bridge is no virus at all, it's an official program from the Android Software Development Kit developed by Google. It seems the problem is specific to Panda Antivirus, as I found this forum thread where the program erroneously detects another ADB build as virus: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=61666109#post61666109. I can assure you my program is no virus. If you cannot install it due to the antivirus program, you might have to shortly disable the antivirus program.

Important: Some apps do not recognize the reverse tethered Internet connection because they only check for Wifi or 3G connections. This limitation applies to recent versions of Play Store, Youtube, Facebook, WhatsApp and others. If you find an app is incompatible with ReverseTethering NoRoot, please don't give my app a bad rating. It's not an issue of my app, but of the other one, so I cannot change anything about the incompatibility. Instead, please contact the author of the third-party app.

  16. now i am getting some data and some err_empty_response but it is "rolling" ...slowly....i don't know if this is normal or not:)....but for some reason i can't get that server icon in tray

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There must be an issue with the server. Connections should be as fast as Wifi (they are on my device). Your assumptions from above are correct: When my app is working, you can disable Wifi and Mobile data and still most apps will have Internet access. Please download another version of the server program from above: The one for Ubuntu. In fact, this version runs on all operating systems, but has to be started differently. Unpack the downloaded archive, then open a command shell, navigate to the folder where you unzipped the archive, then type "java -jar ReverseTetheringServer_1.0.3.jar". The program will then show debug output. Let me know what it says.

    Device detected:1
    Device connected:0

Says connecting, connecting, connecting but nothing happens on the phone screen, zero data transferred, zero everything, just the hope that it will connected someday. I'm beginning to think this app mostly works on rooted devices.

Still a long way to go to bring reverse tethering to unrooted devices. But thanks for the effort to the developer anyways.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The app does NOT need root and works perfectly on my devices (which are unrooted). It not connecting has absolutely nothing to do with your device being unrooted. Try if these steps help:
      1. Completely close the app via the Android task manager. You could also do a reboot.
      2. Stop the server program
      3. Disconnect the USB cable
      4. Connect the USB cable again
      5. Start the Android app
      6. Press connect in the Android app
      7. Start the server program

If they do not help, please send me an email and I'll give my best to find out why it doesn't connect on your device.

  44. Hi,
When I got the app to work it worked really well up until the limit was reached! :)
For Samsung S6 ADB USB driver go here: http://developer.samsung.com/board/download.do?bdId=T000000117&attachId=0000000003

You will need recent JAVA download as well, but as soon as the above USB driver was loaded the whole system worked. May look into the Pro Version :)

I may have to play about with the settings to get various games apps etc that are server based (i.e Last Empire Z) but all was working that's when I hit the time limit!

In all, I like it. Trying again in 18 minutes...

    Kind Regards,
    Karl

    1. The server does not have to be installed, you clearly did not read the instructions. If you still have troubles after having read the instructions, send me an email.

  48. Could you leave links to the older versions? because server 1.0.7 was working fine, but the new server most of the time is not locating my phones (keep showing connecting). My Java is the latest version. 1.0.8 sometimes recognizes, sometimes doesn't

  49. Tested on Galaxy Note 1 (GT-N7000), and Windows 7. Works perfectly, even Google Play Store works (Version 6.5.08.D-all [0] 2792142)
    Excelent work!
Feedback: Reverse tethering server's icon on notification panel is white (at least in my case), which is confusing as you don't see it. I ended up running several times and asked myself why it wasn't working, until I realize it was "disguised".

  60. Windows & Galaxy Tab-A Reverse Tethering. When connecting a message box comes up on the Tab-A stating "Reverse Tether wants to establish a VPN for network traffic monitoring OK CANCEL". What is this about? Can it be canceled and the app still work?
